You'll need

  • clean, dry small plastic bottle with cap
  • scissors or a craft knife (for you)
  • sandpaper or tape for edges
  • kibble

Set up

Remove the label and wash and dry the bottle. Cut 4 to 6 holes a bit larger than one piece of kibble. Smooth every edge.

How to play

  1. Cut holes around the middle of the bottle, spaced out.

  2. Sand or tape the edges until they feel smooth to your fingertip.

  3. Pour in a small portion of kibble and screw the cap on tight.

  4. Roll it gently in front of your cat so kibble falls out.

  5. Let it bat and roll the bottle on its own.

House rules

  • Smooth edges only.
  • Cap stays on (remove the cap ring if loose).
Make it easier
More holes, larger holes, less kibble.
Make it harder
Fewer, smaller holes.

Signs it's having fun

Batting and chasing the bottle across the floor, eating as it goes.

Stop if you see

Chewing the plastic, or frustration.

Safety

  • Check edges each time; throw the bottle out when cracked or chewed.
  • Remove loose cap rings, which can be swallowed.
  • Supervise the first few sessions.
