You'll need

  • leash
  • a mat or towel
  • low-value treats

Set up

Pick a quiet spot far from the action: a park bench, the front step, a car with the boot open in a quiet car park.

How to play

  1. Sit down with your dog on the mat beside you, leash loose.

  2. Let your dog look around and sniff the air.

  3. When your dog looks at something, then looks away or back at you, drop a treat on the mat.

  4. Stay 5 to 10 minutes. Talk little.

  5. Leave before your dog gets restless.

House rules

  • Distance is your friend: stay far enough that your dog can still eat.
  • Nothing is asked; calm watching is the goal.
Make it easier
Go somewhere quieter or stay only 2 minutes.
Make it harder
Sit a little closer to a busier spot, still within your dog's comfort.

Signs it's having fun

Soft eyes, slow sniffing of the air, eventually lying down.

Stop if you see

Barking, lunging, panting, refusing food. Move further away or go home.

Safety

  • Hot days: shade and water, or skip it. Pavements can burn paws.
  • Puppies who aren't fully vaccinated: sit on your lap or in a quiet garden.
