Set up
Pick a calm moment: before you leave, during nail trims, at the vet, or during fireworks.
How to play
Spread a thin layer of soft food over the mat and press it into the grooves.
Put it on the floor, or stick it to a tile or bath wall with its suction cups.
Let your dog lick for as long as they like.
Pick it up when clean so it doesn't get chewed.
Try it during handling: your dog licks while you brush, check ears or trim nails.
Freeze it for a longer session on hot days.
House rules
- Lick mat out, you nearby; done, mat away.
- Wash after each use.
- Make it easier
- Use runny food in big ridges so it comes off quickly.
- Make it harder
- Freeze it, use finer grooves, or layer two foods.
Signs it's having fun
Slow, rhythmic licking, soft eyes, maybe a sigh or a nap after.
Stop if you see
Chewing the mat or guarding it from people or pets.
Safety
- Check spreads for xylitol (birch sugar); it is poisonous to dogs.
- Stop if your dog chews the mat; pieces can block the gut.
- Avoid grapes, raisins, onion, garlic and chocolate.
- Use part of the daily food allowance so treats don't add extra calories.
