Shell game for dogs: how to play
Hide a treat under one of three cups and let your dog choose. A memory and nose game for the kitchen floor.
- Time
- 5 min
- Energy
- Low
- Space
- Small room
You'll need
- 3 sturdy plastic cups or flowerpots
- smelly treats
Set up
Sit on the floor facing your dog with three upside-down cups in a row between you.
How to play
Let your dog watch you put a treat under one cup.
Say "Find it". When your dog noses or paws the right cup, lift it and let them eat the treat.
If your dog picks the wrong cup, lift it to show it's empty, then calmly reset. No fuss.
Once your dog picks right most of the time, slowly slide the cups around while your dog watches.
Next, hide the treat while your dog can't see. Now the nose has to choose.
Play 5 to 8 rounds and end while your dog is still keen.
House rules
- Your dog chooses by touching a cup; you do the lifting.
- Wrong choices just reset. No "no".
- Make it easier
- Use one cup only, or use a see-through cup for the first rounds.
- Make it harder
- Use more cups, shuffle faster, or hide two treats and two empty cups with a toy smell.
Signs it's having fun
Eager nose touches, quick decisions, waiting for the next round.
Stop if you see
Your dog starts knocking cups over in frustration, chewing them, or barking at you.
Safety
- Use cups that won't crack or splinter; supervise so your dog doesn't chew plastic.
- Glass and ceramic are not suitable.
