You'll need
- tiny treats
- a toy or jackpot treat
- a helper or tie-out to hold your dog
Set up
Pick a lawn or field with short grass and little wind. Your dog waits with a helper out of sight.
How to play
Walk a straight line about 10 metres, dropping a tiny treat every big step.
Put the jackpot (toy or a few treats) at the end.
Bring your dog to the start and say "Track" or "Find it".
Walk behind on a loose lead. Let your dog work the trail at their own speed.
As your dog gets better, space the treats wider and add one gentle bend.
Later, lay the trail and wait a few minutes before starting, so the scent ages a little.
Celebrate the jackpot, then walk calmly away.
House rules
- Lay the trail into the wind if you can, so scent drifts back toward your dog.
- Walk behind, never in front, so you don't lead.
- Make it easier
- Use more treats, a shorter trail and no turns.
- Make it harder
- Space treats 3 steps apart, add two turns, or leave only footsteps and the jackpot.
Signs it's having fun
Nose glued to the ground, steady pace, a burst of joy at the jackpot.
Stop if you see
Your dog loses interest, pulls frantically, or keeps lifting the head to scan nervously.
Safety
- Use a harness, not a collar, for tracking on lead.
- Avoid hot ground and the hottest part of the day.
- Check the field for hazards first.
