Sniffari walk for dogs: how to play
A slow walk where your dog picks the route and sniffs as long as they like. Many dogs come home calmer than after a fast walk.

- 20 min

- Outdoors
You'll need
- back-clip harness
- long line (3 to 5 metres)
- a few treats
Set up
Pick a quiet place with grass, bushes and posts: a park edge, a woodland path, a quiet street. Allow extra time.
How to play
Clip the long line to a back-clip harness.
Say "Go sniff" and let your dog choose the direction.
Stand still while your dog sniffs. Wait rather than pull them on.
When the line runs out, turn and zig-zag or circle instead of pulling back.
Scatter a few treats in long grass now and then to slow things down.
Walk home on a normal lead.
House rules
- Your dog sets the pace.
- Feed the line through your hands; never wrap it around your wrist.
- No retractable lead: use a flat long line.
- Make it easier
- Start with 10 minutes in a familiar quiet spot.
- Make it harder
- Visit new places with more smells, or add short check-in games like rewarding your dog for looking back at you.
Signs it's having fun
Long sniffs, loose body, soft mouth, the occasional happy roll in the grass.
Stop if you see
Your dog seems on edge, keeps scanning, or shows lip licking, yawning, whale eye (whites of the eyes showing), tucked tail, freezing or turning away. Head somewhere quieter.
Safety
- Check local leash rules before using a long line.
- Avoid hot ground and the middle of hot days; bring water.
- Keep the line short near roads.
