1-2-3 pattern walk for dogs: how to play

Set up
Start indoors with no distractions. This pattern game comes from Leslie McDevitt's Control Unleashed.
How to play
Stand with your dog beside you. Say "1, 2, 3" in a steady voice and on 3 drop a treat by your foot.
Repeat 5 times standing still.
Now take one step on each number. On 3, treat at your leg.
Keep the rhythm steady. Your dog will start looking at your hand on "2".
Use it on walks when you see something your dog finds hard, like another dog far away.
Practise when life is easy so the pattern is ready when life gets hard.
House rules
- Same voice, same rhythm, every time.
- Treat lands by your leg, never thrown ahead.
- Make it easier
- Stand still and count faster, or treat on every number.
- Make it harder
- Count to 5 or 10 before the treat, or use it nearer distractions.
Signs it's having fun
Soft body, glancing up on "2", easy loose leash.
Stop if you see
Your dog won't take treats, scans constantly, or pulls away. Increase distance or go home.
Safety
- Pattern games help with mild worries. For a dog who lunges or bites, work with a qualified behaviour professional.
- Keep enough distance from triggers that your dog can still eat.
