Mat races for dogs: how to play
Toss a mat on the floor and see how fast your dog can run to it and lie down. A fun way to build a strong 'go to your mat'.

- a mat, towel or dog bed
- treats
Set up
Pick a mat that only comes out for training. Your dog should know down.
How to play
Put the mat down. Reward any paw on it.
Then reward all four paws on it, then a down on it. Treats land on the mat.
Add the cue "Mat" as your dog is about to step on.
Race: stand 2 metres away, say "Mat", and count how fast your dog gets into a down.
Release with your release word, toss a treat off the mat, and race again.
Beat your best time, then stop.
House rules
- Treats for being on the mat land on the mat.
- Release word to get off.
- Make it easier
- Stand right next to the mat, or accept a sit instead of a down.
- Make it harder
- Send from further away, from another room, or put the mat somewhere new like a café floor.
Signs it's having fun
Quick dash, a flop down, eyes on you for the next race.
Stop if you see
Your dog slides, seems sore, or loses interest. Shorter session.
Safety
- Use a non-slip mat or put it on carpet so your dog doesn't skid.
- Puppies and seniors: walk, don't race.
