You'll need
- children's sandpit, paddling pool or a framed area
- play sand or loose soil
- toys and chews
Set up
Pick a shady corner. Fill with clean play sand about 30 cm deep for medium dogs. Dampen it so it's easier to dig.
How to play
Fill the pit and dampen the sand.
Bury a toy half way, with part showing. Say "Dig" and cheer as your dog grabs it.
Bury toys deeper, then out of sight while your dog watches.
Then bury things while your dog is indoors so they have to sniff first.
Cover the pit at night.
House rules
- Digging allowed in the pit only.
- If your dog digs elsewhere, calmly take them to the pit and bury something there.
- Make it easier
- Toys right on top of the sand.
- Make it harder
- Deeper treasures, or several toys and only one has a chew tied to it.
Signs it's having fun
Joyful digging, nose deep, proud trot with the find.
Stop if you see
Eating sand, frantic digging that won't stop, or sore pads.
Safety
- Use clean play sand. Avoid sand with sharp shells.
- Cover at night so cats don't use it as a litter box.
- Check for ants or wasps before playing.
- Discourage eating sand; large amounts can block the gut.
