You'll need

  • hand ball thrower or automatic launcher
  • matching dog balls
  • water

Set up

Use a large, flat, soft field. Warm up with 5 minutes of walking and sniffing.

How to play

  1. Ask for a sit or wait before each throw.

  2. Throw low and along the ground so the ball rolls. Avoid high lobs that make your dog leap.

  3. Let the ball stop rolling before you send your dog, so they don't twist mid-sprint.

  4. Do 5 throws, then a 2-minute break with water and sniffing.

  5. Do no more than 3 or 4 sets. Mix in a sniff game between sets.

  6. Cool down with a slow 5-minute walk.

House rules

  • Wait for the ball to stop before "Get it".
  • Breaks every 5 throws.
  • Ball goes away at the end; it isn't left out for endless solo play.
Make it easier
Use your hand instead of the launcher; shorter throws.
Make it harder
Send your dog on a hand signal, or ask them to wait while you throw two balls and send to one.

Signs it's having fun

Keen focus, fast return, but still able to drink, sniff and settle in breaks.

Stop if you see

Your dog can't settle in breaks, stares fixedly at the launcher, is limping or panting heavily.

Safety

  • Repeated sprinting, sudden stops and twisting can strain joints and muscles.
  • Ball must be too big to swallow; small balls in big dogs are a choking risk.
  • Not for puppies or dogs with joint problems.
  • Avoid heat; offer small sips of water every 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Wait about an hour after meals.
