Set up
Play in a garden or big room. Keep a second toy in your pocket.
How to play
When your dog grabs a toy and dances away, don't chase.
Turn your back, crouch or jog the other way and make happy noises.
When your dog comes near with the toy, play with the second toy on the ground.
When they drop the first toy, play with them using the second toy, or toss a treat away from you and pick up the first toy.
Repeat until your dog brings toys to you on purpose.
House rules
- You never chase a dog that has a toy.
- Bringing a toy close always starts a fun game.
- Make it easier
- Sit on the floor in a small room so your dog doesn't have much space to run from you.
- Make it harder
- Ask for the toy to be dropped in your hand.
Signs it's having fun
Your dog trots up with the toy, wiggly and pushing it toward you.
Stop if you see
Any guarding: freezing, hard stare, growl over the toy.
Safety
- If your dog stiffens, growls or guards a toy, don't take it. Trade calmly for a treat and get help from a qualified trainer.
