The everyday hunt. Move a wand toy like prey so your cat can stalk, chase, pounce and finally catch it, then wind down with a snack.

You'll need

  • wand toy
  • a few treats or part of a meal

Set up

Pick a time your cat is awake and a little hungry, ideally before a meal. Clear a few metres of floor and leave one or two hiding spots (a chair, a box, a cushion) for the toy to dart behind. Keep the treat or meal ready for the end.

How to play

  1. Start slow. Let the toy sit still a little away from your cat, then twitch it once or twice. Prey does not run at a cat, so keep the toy moving away from or across your cat, never at its face.

  2. Stalk phase: drag the toy slowly along the floor and let it vanish behind the chair or cushion. Pause. Let your cat creep, crouch and wiggle its rear.

  3. Chase phase: dart the toy in short bursts with stops in between. Fast, stop, fast, stop. Change direction like a frightened mouse.

  4. Pounce and catch: let your cat catch the toy every few pounces. Hold the wand still for a few seconds so it can bite and bunny-kick the toy before it 'escapes' again.

  5. Wind-down: for the last two minutes, slow everything down. The toy moves less and gets tired, like injured prey. End with one easy final catch and let your cat keep the toy for a moment.

  6. Eat: give the treat or the meal right after the final catch. Hunt, catch, eat. Most cats then groom and settle for a nap.

House rules

  • The toy always moves away from or across your cat, never toward it.
  • Let your cat win often. A catch every 3 to 5 pounces keeps it keen.
  • Hands and feet are never toys. The wand keeps teeth and claws on the toy.
  • Always end with a real catch, then food.
Make it easier
Use slow, low ground moves and a short wand. Let your cat catch on the first or second try. For shy cats, keep the toy far away and let it disappear often.
Make it harder
Add more hiding spots, longer stalk pauses and quicker escapes. Use a longer wand so the toy can travel farther and change height.

Signs it's having fun

Wide eyes and dilated pupils, a low crouch with the rear wiggling, tail held low and twitching at the tip, chirps or chattering, quick returns to the toy after each catch.

Stop if you see

Tail lashing hard side to side, ears flattened or turned sideways, hissing, swatting at you instead of the toy, panting or open-mouth breathing. Panting means stop now and let your cat rest; if it does not settle within a few minutes, call your vet.

Safety

  • Put the wand away in a closed cupboard after every session. Cats can chew and swallow string, elastic and feathers, which can block or cut the gut.
  • If you ever see string hanging from your cat's mouth or bottom, do not pull it. Call your vet now.
  • Check the toy for loose feathers, bells and frayed cord before each session.
  • Do not touch or pick up a cat that is still in play mode. It may bite or scratch by accident.
