Fishing game for cats: how to play
Your cat fishes a toy out from behind cover: over the edge of the bed, through a gap or out of a deep box. Lots of paw-scooping.

You'll need
- wand toy (fishing-rod style)
- a bed, sofa or a deep cardboard box
- treats
Set up
Sit on one side of the bed or sofa with your cat on top. Or stand a deep box on its side with the opening facing your cat. The toy will hide just over the edge or inside the box.
How to play
Dangle the toy just over the edge of the bed so only the tip shows. Twitch it.

When your cat reaches a paw over the edge, pull the toy just out of reach, then let it drift back.
Let your cat hook the toy with its paw and pull it up. That is the catch. Hold still for a few seconds.
Box version: move the toy around inside the box so your cat scoops into the opening.

Change sides so your cat has to move around the edge to find where the fish will appear.
End with an easy catch and a treat.
House rules
- The cat must get the fish within 5 or so reaches.
- Toy stays near the edge so your cat does not fall.
- Make it easier
- Let the toy show more and catch it on the first reach. Good for seniors who like to lie down and swipe.
- Make it harder
- Use a gap under a door or a box with two openings so the fish can switch exits.
Signs it's having fun
Paw reaching and hooking, head tilting to peek over the edge, eager waiting at the edge.
Stop if you see
Leaning too far over the edge, getting frustrated (yowling, walking off), or swatting at your hand.
Safety
- Only fish over a low bed or sofa edge. Avoid tall furniture where a cat could fall while reaching.
- Store the wand after the game.
