You'll need

  • flirt pole (1 to 2 metre pole, rope, securely tied toy)

Set up

Use an open, fenced area with good footing like dry grass. Warm up with a 5-minute walk. Practise swinging the pole without your dog first.

How to play

  1. Let your dog sniff the pole lying still on the ground. No game yet.

  2. Drag the toy slowly along the ground in front of your dog. Let them chase and catch it.

  3. Move the toy in wide circles low to the ground, keeping it just ahead of your dog. Switch hands so your dog runs both ways.

  4. Let your dog catch it often. Give a short gentle tug, then say "Drop it" and hold the pole still.

  5. When they let go, ask for a sit or wait, then say "Get it" and start again.

  6. After 3 to 5 short chases, end with a sniffy cool-down like treat scatter.

House rules

  • Keep the toy on or just above the ground. No waving it high.
  • Every few seconds of chasing, pause for a drop or a sit.
  • Wide gentle arcs, no sharp yanks.
Make it easier
Move slowly in straight lines and let your dog win every time.
Make it harder
Ask for a wait while the lure moves, then release with "Get it".

Signs it's having fun

Bright eyes, bouncy chase, easy release and ready for the next round.

Stop if you see

Your dog is panting hard, limping, won't release, or shows over-arousal: frantic grabbing, nipping hands or clothes, hard staring, barking at you or not hearing cues it knows.

Safety

  • Keep the lure low so your dog never leaps and twists.
  • Avoid wet grass, tile, and gravel.
  • Check that the toy is tied on tightly.
  • Sessions short: 5 to 10 minutes, a few times a week. Stop if your dog is breathless or limping.
  • Puppies and flat-faced breeds: very short, gentle sessions. Check with your vet first.
  • One dog per pole; keep other dogs away.
