Cushion balance for dogs: how to play
Your dog stands with front paws, then all four, on a sofa cushion. Small wobbles build core strength.

- Small room
You'll need
- firm sofa cushion or folded yoga mat
- treats
Set up
Put the cushion on carpet or a non-slip mat. Start with something low and firm.
How to play
Lure your dog to put two front paws on the cushion. Reward.
Feed 3 to 5 treats while they stay in position, holding the treat low so the head is level.
When that's easy, lure all four paws onto the cushion.
Ask for a sit, then a stand, on the cushion.
Do 3 sets of 20 seconds, with breaks.
House rules
- Stop while it's still easy.
- Feed with the head level, not up.
- Make it easier
- Use a folded towel instead of a cushion.
- Make it harder
- Use a softer cushion, a wobble cushion, or a balance disc, and add sit-to-stand on top.
Signs it's having fun
Concentrating, steady, maybe a little tremble of effort; happy to step back on.
Stop if you see
Shaking legs, jumping off, or refusing. Use an easier surface.
Safety
- Check with your vet before starting fitness work, especially for seniors, overweight dogs or dogs with joint problems.
- Spot your dog with a hand near their side the first time.
- Avoid inflatable discs for puppies and seniors without a vet's okay.
