You'll need

  • clicker or a word like “yes”
  • small soft treats
  • your cat's bed or a cat tree platform

Why it matters

A cued 'bed' gives your cat a calm job when the doorbell rings, during dinner or when guests arrive.

Before you start

Play with a wand toy for a few minutes first, then train in a quiet room before a meal. Warm up with 2 or 3 known tricks.

Step by step

  1. Mat skills on the bed

Stand next to the bed. Toss a treat on it. Click when all four feet are in. Treat in the bed.

Move on when: Steps into the bed 8 out of 10 tries

Tip: Use what your cat already learned in the mat lesson.

  2. Lie down

Wait for a down in the bed, then click and treat between the front paws.

Move on when: Lies down in the bed 6 out of 10 tries

Tip: Treat low and slow to encourage settling.

  3. Add the cue

Say "Bed" and point. Click the down in the bed.

Move on when: Lies down on bed cue from 1 m, 4 of 5 times

Tip: Give 2 or 3 extra treats for staying.

  4. Add distance

Ask from 2 m, then across the room, then from the doorway.

Move on when: Goes to bed from 3 m away 4 out of 5 times

Tip: Each time you add distance, walk halfway with your cat at first.

  5. Stay a while

Build a short stay in the bed: 10 seconds, 30 seconds, a minute. Release with your word.

Move on when: Stays in the bed for 1 minute, 4 out of 5 times

Tip: Drop treats calmly into the bed during the wait.

The cue

Say
“Bed”
Hand signal
Point to the bed

If it isn't working

Hops in and straight out
Feed 3 treats in a row in the bed; the stay is the paid part.
Ignores the cue at a distance
Go closer. Distance is added only when the closer version is easy.
Goes to bed but will not lie down
Accept sitting for now, or wait it out quietly. Try right after play when it is tired.

Safety

  • The bed should always be a safe place.
  • Never use it for time-outs or put your cat there by force.

Mastered when

Goes to bed from 3 m and stays 1 minute, in 2 rooms, 4 out of 5 times

Video check: Film a cued 'bed' from across the room and a 30 second stay
