How to teach your cat to back up
Your cat backs up on cue, shaped one back-foot step at a time in a narrow lane.
- Difficulty
- Takes time
- Session
- 3 min
- To learn
- 10-25 sessions
You'll need
- clicker or a word like “yes”
- small soft treats
- narrow 30 cm lane: sofa and boxes
Why it matters
Backing up builds rear-end awareness for agility and tricks like a bow. It is a classic shaping exercise because it cannot really be lured.
Before you start
Play first. Train in a quiet room before a meal. Have 30 to 50 tiny treats and a clear marker plan. Warm up with one easy trick your cat loves.
Step by step
Set up a lane
Make a 30 cm wide lane along a sofa. Stand at one end, cat facing you inside it.
Move on when: Lane set up
Tip: The walls stop the cat turning sideways.
Mark a weight shift
Step slightly towards your cat. Click any shift of weight backwards. Toss the treat behind the cat.
Move on when: 8 rewards for weight shifts
Tip: Tossing behind sets up the next back step.
One back foot
Now click only a back-foot step.
Move on when: One back step 8 out of 10 tries
Tip: Toss treats behind the cat every time.
Two steps
Click after two steps.
Move on when: Two steps 4 out of 5 times
Tip: Go back to one step if two is hard.
Add the cue
Say "Back" as you lean forward slightly.
Move on when: Backs 2 to 3 steps on cue 4 out of 5 times
Tip: Fade the lean once the word works.
Out of the lane
Remove one wall, then the other.
Move on when: Backs 3 steps on open floor 4 out of 5 times
Tip: Back up along a wall before open floor.
The cue
- Say
- “Back”
- Hand signal
- Small push of both palms towards the cat
If it isn't working
- Sits during shaping
- Mark before sit when weight shifts back. Stand still instead of leaning.
- Turns round in lane
- Narrow the lane.
- Walks forward to you
- Toss every treat behind it.
Safety
- Watch for frustration: tail flicking, skin rippling, walking away, sudden grooming or swatting.
- If you see it, make the next step easier or end with an easy win.
- Only on non-slip floors. Never walk into your cat to push it back.
